Frequently Asked Questions
What issues do you specialize in?
I specialize in trauma-informed therapy for adults experiencing PTSD, anxiety, depression, burnout, and stress. Many of my clients are first responders, veterans, healthcare workers, or professionals in high-pressure roles. I also work with clients healing from complex trauma, childhood emotional neglect, sexual assault, grief, and relationship challenges.
Do you work with first responders and veterans?
Yes. I’ve worked with first responders and veterans since 2018 and come from a first responder family myself. I understand the culture and challenges of service-related stress and trauma. My therapy space is respectful, practical, and focused on helping you heal while honoring your experience.
What is EMDR therapy?
EMDR (Eye Movement Desensitization and Reprocessing) is an evidence-based therapy that helps people heal from trauma and distressing experiences. It uses bilateral stimulation (such as eye movements) to help the brain reprocess painful memories so they no longer feel overwhelming. EMDR is often used to treat PTSD, anxiety, and related conditions.
Do you offer online therapy?
Yes. I offer secure, HIPAA-compliant telehealth sessions to adults living in Maryland. Online therapy is convenient, flexible, and accessible for clients with demanding schedules or limited local options.
What types of therapy do you use?
I use evidence-based therapies tailored to your goals. These include EMDR, Cognitive Behavioral Therapy (CBT), Dialectical Behavior Therapy (DBT), Cognitive Processing Therapy (CPT), and Accelerated Resolution Therapy (ART). Sessions are collaborative, practical, and paced to support your comfort and readiness.
What is your approach to therapy?
My style is warm, authentic, and down-to-earth. I use humor, compassion, and practical tools to help you feel supported without pressure to talk about every detail. You set the pace, and I walk alongside you. I offer a respectful, nonjudgmental space where you can show up exactly as you are.
Do you accept insurance?
Yes. Madison Elie Counseling, LLC is in-network with:
Aetna
United Healthcare
For all other providers, I am considered out-of-network. I can provide you with a detailed superbill that you can submit to your insurance for possible reimbursement. If your plan includes out-of-network mental health benefits, it may cover part or all of your therapy costs.
I also work with Thrizer, a claims submission service that helps simplify the reimbursement process by submitting claims on your behalf.
Additionally, I partner with several nonprofit organizations that provide financial assistance for therapy, especially for first responders, veterans, and trauma survivors. If cost is a concern, let’s talk about your options.
How long are sessions, and how often will we meet?
Standard therapy sessions are 53 minutes. Most clients start with weekly sessions, though frequency can be adjusted based on your goals, needs, and schedule.
What is your cancellation policy?
I ask for 48 hours' notice to cancel or reschedule a session. Appointments canceled with less than 48 hours’ notice may be subject to a cancellation fee.
Do you offer supervision for LGPCs in Maryland?
Yes. I am a Maryland Board-Approved Supervisor and offer individual clinical supervision for LGPCs. My supervision approach is supportive, collaborative, and focused on building your confidence and skills in real-world practice. I work with new clinicians in private practice, agencies, and telehealth settings.
How do I get started?
Start by scheduling a free 15-minute consultation. We’ll talk about what you’re looking for, answer your questions, and see if we’re a good fit. If we decide to move forward, you’ll receive access to a secure client portal where you can complete intake forms and schedule your first session.
What if I am in crisis?
If you are experiencing a crisis or emergency, please call 911 or go to your nearest emergency room immediately. For 24/7 crisis support, you can also contact the National Suicide Prevention Lifeline at 988.
Ready to Get Started?
The first step is to schedule a free 15-minute phone consultation. This is a chance for us to get to know each other a little. I will ask a few questions about what is bringing you to therapy, and you will have time to ask anything you would like about how I work.
If it feels like a good match, we can schedule your first session. You will receive access to your secure, HIPAA-compliant client portal, where you can complete paperwork and share anything you would like me to know before we begin.
You’ve spent so much time showing up for others. Let this be the moment you show up for yourself.
